This project came together in stages. The basic idea of an album of local artists covering other local artists is something that had been floating around my head for a while when I decided to do a poll on Instragram and see if there were other 518 musicians who might want in. I got a pretty good reaction, so I decided to try to make it happen. At this point, this was solely about celebrating this robust music scene that I’ve been honored to have wormed my way into over the last couple of years.

Then the imminent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked. It may not have been unexpected, but a blow is a blow whether or not you see it coming. Before the decision was even official, I watched artists and musicians in the area helping to support the ongoing fight to protect abortion rights, and as I was working on getting this covers compilation off the ground, I realized that this was an opportunity for me to do the same.

Now this collection of songs serves two purposes: it highlights the fantastic local art/music scene in this area, and it serves as a fundraising opportunity to help those affected by the sudden removal of healthcare protections that have stood in place (despite a barrage of attacks) for decades. I chose to specifically give all proceeds from this album to the National Network of Abortion Funds because they help directly support individuals who are in immediate need.

To those who contributed to or supported this project, to those who are buying this album, and especially to all those who are out fighting for reproductive rights and supporting those who need it, I just want to say:

Their mission of helping to connect and bolster the local funds which are providing front-line assistance to those who need it as well as their holistic view that emphasizes the intersectionality of this fight with the battles being pursued to secure justice on other fronts (economic, racial, gender-based) is what made me decide that this was where I wanted any funds to go.
While purchasing this album will directly benefit the NNAF, I would also urge everyone to find other ways to help to support this cause as well, in whatever way is within your means.
